The importance of the local community in tourism at Hotel Las Islas
A Tribute to Our Collaborators
Labor Day is a special occasion to honor those who, with their effort and dedication, contribute to the success of Hotel Las Islas. On this day, we take the opportunity to highlight the importance of the Barulera community, which makes up 80% of our team. The populations of Ararca, Santana, and Barú bring a rich local culture that not only influences our daily operations but also the quality of the service and the experience we offer our guests.
The local culture is reflected in every corner of Hotel Las Islas. From the flavors of our kitchen team, to the warmth of the receptionists and the attention of the housekeeping staff, the Barulera community has a direct impact on the guest experience. This connection with the Barulera culture not only enhances the work environment but also reinforces our commitment to the community and the surroundings of Isla Barú.

The Hotel’s Workforce: Success Stories from Locals
The Barulera community has been key to the success of Hotel Las Islas. A clear example of this is Eduardo San Martin, the General Manager of the hotel, who started his career as a receptionist. Through years of dedication and ongoing training, Eduardo has advanced within the hotel, demonstrating how local employees can reach key positions within the hospitality industry.
In his own words, Eduardo says:
"Feeling a deep responsibility for the hotel’s well-being and improving the guest experience motivated me to continue learning and advance in my career."
Eduardo, from Santana, is a clear example of how internal training and constant effort can allow local collaborators to take on high-responsibility roles. Furthermore, other collaborators, such as the Head of Reception, who is a native of Santana, and the Operations Manager, from Barú, started in basic positions and, thanks to their dedication, managed to rise to key positions within Hotel Las Islas.
Additionally, he mentions:
"For me, love and commitment to the work have been fundamental. Feeling a deep responsibility for the well-being of the hotel, taking ownership of its challenges, and always striving to improve it makes all the difference. Also, self-improvement and the desire to be a role model for others—showing that as an islander and Barulero, we also have opportunities—is a constant motivation to learn, educate, and continue advancing."
Eduardo, the first local to lead the hotel, emphasizes how his origin provides him with the charisma and sense of service that characterize the islanders:
"Being from Santana and being the first local to lead such a large hotel is both an honor and a great responsibility. My background gives me the charisma and sense of service that characterize islanders. This combination of local identity and professional training allows me to offer exceptional, high-quality service, making a difference in both our guests' experience and our internal management."
A Recognition of Collective Effort
This Labor Day, we take the opportunity to recognize the collective effort of the entire Barulera community. The dedication of our employees has been essential to the continuous improvement of the services we offer and in establishing Hotel Las Islas as a reference in the hospitality industry. The Barulera community has shown that with effort and training, it is possible to improve service and advance professionally within the hotel.
